The SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI) has proposed a roadmap for promotion of economic cooperation between China and South Asian countries.
A SAARC CCI statement issued here on Friday said that the nine-point agenda proposed by SAARC CCI included convening of Sichuan- South Asia Business Summit as a regular annual feature, formation of advisory panel constituting representatives of CCPIT Sichuan Sub-council and South Asian Chambers, sharing of information about the potential and mutually benefitted areas, undertaking sector-specific studies and pre-feasibility reports on core and potential sector, exchange of fact-finding missions to explore untapped potential in trade and investment, inflow of investment from China to South Asian countries, preferential market Access to South Asian nations, removal of NTBs and PTBs, provision of 500 multiple business for at least one year period to all South Asian nations, relocation of labour-intensive industries from China to South Asia, investment in infrastructure building to improve connectivity and foster economic cooperation.
Annisul Huq, President SAARC CCI suggested a nine-point agenda while immediate past president Tariq Sayeed presented the idea for inclusion of China into SAARC as a full-fledged member and asserted the need for creation of South Asia-China Youth Forum to ensure sustainability of historical relationship between two great civilisations of South Asia.
These ideas were floated during the 2nd Sichuan-South Asia business promotion seminar held in Chengdu the capital city of Sichuan on 25th February 2011, which was also addressed by Zhang Zou- ha, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province, Yu Ping, Vice President CCPIT Beijing also addressed the seminar.
While addressing the conference, President SAARC CCI said that China and South Asia being the two oldest civilisations and neigbouring countries, have a tremendous potential which needs to be harnessed through solid cooperation in mutually interested areas. “China is an economic ocean and South Asia has the potential to become part of the ocean,” he said. He admired the economic vision of the leadership of China, stating that China after opening up it market for Foreign Direct Investment in late 1980s, China made an exemplary development. “A consistent double digit growth for more than two decades coupled with reduction in poverty from 40% to just 8% is perhaps one of the wonders of 21st Century. China now stands leading export nations surpassing behind Germany with more than export volume of $1.3 trillion in the year 2010,” said President SAARC CCI adding that this success story of China is a role model for many countries of the World including South Asian Nations.
Tariq Sayeed while providing historical perspective of China and South Asia’s role in global economy said from 15th century to mid of eighteen century, the share of these two nations was more than 50% and hoped that the if the current trend of Chinese and Indian economic growth remained on high trajectory, their share may again exceed to 50% in global economy by 2025 and Asia can resume the role of Global economic leader.
Mostofa Azad Chowdery Babu, Vice President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FBCCI), Mr. Kush Kumar Joshi, President Nepalese Chamber of Commerce (FNCCI), Senator Ghulam Ali, President, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry and representatives of other chambers from South Asian countries give presentations on cooperation with China in perspective of their respective countries.
Pakistan delegation to China also comprised of Aamir Ata Bajwa, Vice President, Mansha Churra, former Vice FPCCI, Javed Khalili, Vice Chairman Pakistan-China Business Council and Naseem Vohra participated in the conference from Pakistan, Iqbal Tabish, Secretary General, SAARC CCI was invited by Li Li, Vice Chairman, CCPIT sub-council Sichuan Province.
Hasan Habib, Consul General of Pakistan to Chengdu during session addressed by representatives of South Asian Missions in China gave presentation on trade and investment scenario in Pakistan and invited the Chinese business community to invest in Pakistan in the sectors also identified by Tariq Sayeed and Senator Ghulam Ali during their addressed. Business to business meetings amongst more than 50 enterprises were also held before the commencement of the Conference while Indian, Sri Lankan and Maldivian institutions signed MoUs followed by inauguration of FPCCI Office by President FPCCI and Vice Governor of Sichuan and with MNCCI representatives for Maldives National Chambers office in Chengdu.
