South Korea jobless rate edges up in May

SEOUL: South Korea's unemployment rate inched up in May, with fewer jobs being created in the manufacturing sector, government data showed Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate stood at 3.2 percent in May, up from 3.1 percent the previous month, according to Statistics Korea.

It was the first month-on-month increase since February.

The statistics agency said the number of social-welfare jobs increased while job gains in the manufacturing sector slowed down.

The data came a day before the central Bank of Korea meets to set key interest rates for the month following a surprise policy rate cut in May.

All 15 analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswire tipped the bank to hold rates unchanged at 2.50 percent.
